A Little Heart Goes A Very Long Way
MV Candleworks to Fund "Lighthouse Africa"
Photo: Candle making equipment and supplies funded by Mill Valley Candleworks and Light A Heart will provide light in the darkness and a cottage industry for Kigali Africa, the capital of Rwanda.
You could say that at the heart of Mill Valley Candleworks is a heart candle. From the inception of this business, owners Marni and Michael Salit had a mission - to design a special candle that would provide revenue to benefit a cause close to their hearts. That cause would be Autism, as their eldest son Alex is Autistic. Symbolically, that special candle became a heart, and thus, the Light A Heart Foundation was born. Over the past three years, the Salits have given a percentage of profits from their heart candle to fund research, education and patient services for Autistic children. The heart candle has also served as a symbol and a means for raising funds for other non-profit organizations and a variety of causes including: the Heart Association, Aids Relief, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and local education and arts programs. In a short period of time, a little heart has gone a very long way, and now it will take on new meaning with a new project - Lighthouse Africa.
The Lighthouse Africa project is about providing light to a community of darkness. By funding the purchase of necessary candle making tools and materials, the Light A Heart Foundation and Mill Valley Candleworks aim to develop a long term, self-sustaining, micro business opportunity for people in underdeveloped countries around the world. The mission is to bring light and opportunity to communities in need. The first "lighthouse" will be set up in Kigali Africa, the capital of Rwanda. The initial candles will be made and given to a small village on the outskirts of Rwanda that has no light.
The Lighthouse project will begin as the Light A Heart Foundation and Mill Valley Candleworks assemble a complete candle making kit, which includes wax melters, molds, wicks, wax and color. These items will be shipped to Africa along with detailed documentation on setup procedures and candle making techniques. Once the Lighthouse arrives in Africa, a team of people representing the Light a Heart Foundation, will set up the lighthouse. This team will teach the Rwandan people all aspects of candle making and develop a marketing and distribution strategy. Mill Valley Candleworks will coordinate its efforts with networks of established organizations in the art, non-profit, NGO and retail communities. The goal is to develop a model that is scalable and can be implemented anywhere in the world.
The Light A Heart Foundation welcomes public financial support. Through generous donations, the Foundation will provide both light and hope that will illuminate the lives and future of people all over the world. During the months of February though May, 2007, 100 % of the profits from the sale of heart candles and ornaments will be donated to the Lighthouse Africa.
